Satellite Imagery
Satellite images from a variety of different satellites including:
- SPOT
- Landsat
- IKONOS
- RADARSAT
These satellites and the imagery that they produce are described in detail in the Satellite Remote Sensing section. Terranean offers value-added services to ortho-rectify this data, so that it can be integrated accurately with other GIS data.
Also, Terranean can interpret the data to extract specific information such as land use, land cover, vegetation, geology and soil. Satellite Imagery is particularly useful for the detecting and mapping of virtually any change in the landscape.
Landsat Time Series Imagery Package (1972–2004)
A major advantage of satellites is that they can regularly remap the same area. As a result, there are now comprehensive historical archives of imagery covering much of the world.
Terranean has had considerable interest from organisations including local, state, and federal government, as well as the agricultural and environmental sectors, for historical satellite imagery packages, which can be easily used and integrated into a GIS.
The Landsat Time Series Imagery Package (1972–2004) is a GIS-ready package that includes a time series of twelve satellite images dating from the 1972 to 2004. The images are Landsat based. Landsat was designed for broad scale mapping and includes infra red and thermal bands, which makes the data ideal for monitoring changes in land use such as vegetation and urban development.
The package provides a great opportunity for planners to put current issues into a historical context, by following the progression of urban development, land clearing, regrowth, and other physical processes throughout an area of interest, during the past 30 years.
The following table describes the approximate time of capture and type of image for each of the twelve images.
| Year | Landsat Specification |
|---|---|
| 1972 | 80m mss |

Satellite Property Plans
Satellite images provide a cost-effective base for mapping farms and larger properties. Over the last 10 years Terranean has specialised in creating satellite-based farm maps and associated plans, and has provided this service to 100’s of clients. Increased legislative requirements across Australia, such as vegetation and land clearing laws and a general need for more efficient land management practices, has resulted in an unprecedented demand for property maps.
Terranean has continued to innovate and has further streamline the usually complex process of creating and supplying these maps. The result is a quick, low-cost, information-rich mapping service covering any property in Australia. Terranean offers this as a standard product called the Satellite Property Plan.

SPOT imagery showing land use
The Satellite Property Plan uses high resolution SPOT5 colour imagery of 2.5
or 10 meter ground resolution.
The package of data included in a Satellite Property Plan also includes historical time series Landsat backdrop (as described above), as well as property boundaries of the subject and surrounding adjacent properties. The Landsat series provides a historic context to planning, while the SPOT image provides a basis for detailed mapping of property specific information. Specifically, the combination of historic Landsat and recent SPOT images enables the mapping of remnant vegetation and regrowth.
In some states, Terranean also offers the option of vegetation data and regional eco-system information.
The Satellite Property Plan can be used by producers, agricultural consultants, and the developers and retailers of farm management software, as a comprehensive suite of information that can form the basis of Vegetation Management Plans, farm management plans, and applications for government grants. The packages are provided in a nominated GIS format, Geo-PDF image, Google Earth or as printed maps.
The Geo-PDF images allow the user to zoom, pan, print, and attach files, such as photographs, to the map without the need to purchase any software. Google Earth format data allows users to use all the power of this free software to view the data using broadband access.

Terranean also can provide further detail to the standard Satellite Property Plan by adding information such as buildings, fences, roads, tracks, creeks, dams, and the property boundaries. The process involves producing a draft base map on which the property owner draws additional information and makes corrections. The draft map then is revised to produce a final map. For large properties, information also can be obtained from published maps and government data sets. Contours, roads, property boundaries, rivers, and creeks are usually available, although the best available scale varies across each state. The availability and cost of this additional information is assessed on a case-by-case basis.
